John L. Sullivan is a successful film
director who wants to produce the long-faced drama, Brother, Where Are Thou?
while his studio prefers that he exercise his talents on something more
comical. Sullivan defies his studio, disguises himself as a hobo, and embarks
on a journey across Depression-era America to chronicle the hardships of a
Southern chain gang.
