Doctor Robert Richardson (Lew Ayres) teaches deaf and mute Belinda McDonald (Jane Wyman) how to communicate. When Belinda becomes pregnant because of a brutal rape, Robert becomes her protector. Most impressive in this atmospheric drama is the successful recreation of the provincial fishing community where the action takes place.
