Miramax Films; Directed by Jane Campion

Rated R; 121 minutes; 1993

Ada (Holly Hunter), a mute widow who communicates through music, arrives with her young daughter (Anna Paquin) and her cherished piano on the bleary beaches of 1850 New Zealand to marry a stranger. Viewing the piano as frivolous, Ada’s new husband (Sam Neill) does not bother to transport the cumbersome piano inland to his home. When another settler (Harvey Keitel) buys the piano from her husband, Ada trades sexual favors for her beloved piano in this dark and erotic drama.
