Mary-Alice Culhane (Mary McDonnell) a snobby soap opera actress is paralyzed in a terrible accident and returns home to Louisiana to wallow in self-pity. While Mary-Alice succeeds in making everyone around her completely miserable, her nurse (Alfre Woodward) refuses to succumb to Mary-Alice’s negative attitude.
