THE CONFORMIST
Jean-Louis Trintignant, Stefania Sandrelli
Paramount Pictures; Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci
Rated PG; 108 minutes; 1970
A rising young follower of Mussolini must assassinate his former professor, now in political exile, to demonstrate his loyalty to the state of Fascism. Bernardo Bertolucci seduces us with gilded images of a decadent society. He equates the rise of Italian fascism with the psychosexual life of his protagonist for whom conformity becomes an obsession after a traumatic homosexual experience in his youth.
