In her feature film debut as a director, author and poet Maya Angelou tells of an African-American family undergoing dramatic readjustments. Loretta (Alfre Woodard) lives in Chicago with her mother and two children where she is heading down a destructive path of drugs and alcohol. To keep her daughter and grandchildren out of harm's way, Loretta's mother pawns her prized heirloom and moves the family back to their ancestral home in the Mississippi delta.
