Sethe (Oprah Winfrey), an ex-slave, kills her child, Beloved, so that she too, would not become a slave in this post-Civil War drama based on Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The ghost (Thandie Newton) of the young girl reappears as a young woman having survived the horrors of a slave ship. It is Beloved who forces Sethe to face the past, for only then, can Sethe be free.
