After years of special education at a private boarding school, Carla (Juliette Lewis), a mildly retarded woman, manages to find love and independence despite her overprotective mother's (Diane Keaton) misguided plans to keep her sheltered and close to home. Carla and her boyfriend set out together to find answers to some of life's toughest challenges, and to prove that sometimes, an ordinary life can be an extraordinary achievement.
