BALL OF FIRE

Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck

Samuel Goldwyn; Directed by Howard Hawks

Black and White; Not Rated; 111 Minutes; 1941

Howard Hawks directs this enormously entertaining comedy which proves that love can be found where least expected. Gary Cooper is a serious, yet lovable English professor working with his colleagues on a slang language dictionary. Miss Stanwyck, a torchy nightclub singer mixed up with the mob, becomes Cooper's language tutor, and a giant headache when he gives her sanctuary in his home. Sparks of laughter fly when she clashes with the law, the gangsters, the shocked professors, and Cooper, who realizes he has a lot to learn about love. Stanwyck phrases it this way, "I love him because he doesn't even know how to kiss—the jerk."
