Abbie (Madonna) forgets Mr. Right and settles for Mr. Right-Now after breaking up with yet another boyfriend. Mr. Right-Now happens to be her gay best friend, Robert (Rupert Everett). Their one intimate night results in Abbie's pregnancy and an agreement to raise the child jointly. Matters become complicated when Abbie falls in love with another man and a hostile custody suit results.
