| 61* chronicles the race for Babe Ruth's home run record that captured a nation. Superstar Mickey Mantle and quiet hero Roger Maris are the players in the race for the record. Mantle was the golden boy for the Yankees on the field but the consummate bad boy off the field letting sex, alcohol and painkillers rule his life. Maris, on the other hand, was quiet and media shy and unprepared for the blitz that besieged him in this quest for the most sacred of baseball records. These two teammates and friends pushed and pulled each other to the record with Maris' quiet grace forcing the wild Mantle to see his destructive lifestyle for what it was and to grow up. When Mantle is sidelined by injuries the film delves into the unrelenting pain and pressure Maris went through in the quest for and eventual attainment of the record. Pepper (Maris) and Jane (Mantle) beautifully portray the loneliness of the two men in the spotlight of the tough and often cruel world of sports fame. This is a film for sports fans and non-sports fans alike! | |||||
