After exchanging his wife Elena (Nastassja Kinski) and their daughter Hope (Sarah Polley) for the claim to a gold mine, Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan) becomes the wealthy owner of a mining town in the mountains of California. Dillon has settled into his life with his mistress Lucia (Milla Jovovich), so he's not quite sure how to face Elena and Hope when they seek him out 20 years after he sold them. Set in 1849, the drama is based on Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge.
