Alexandre Dumas' classic novel provides the story of an innocent man wrongly imprisoned and his strategy for revenge against those who intentionally betrayed him. The innocent hero is a dashing young sailor Edmond Dantes (Caviezel) whose plans to marry the beautiful Mercedes are shattered when his best friend Fernand (Pearce) betrays Edmond to have Mercedes for himself. Edmond’s innocent and honest life is torn apart by thirteen years of wrongful imprisonment, during which his moral code is replaced by an all-consuming plan of vengeance against his betrayers. With the help of a fellow inmate (Harris), Dantes escapes prison and transforms himself into the wealthy and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo. He uses the power of this position to systematically destroy the men who enslaved him.
