This recounting of true events during the Vietnam War is set in the Ia Drang Valley soon to be known as the Valley of Death. In a small clearing called landing zone X-Ray, Lt. Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) and 450 young soldiers, all troopers from an elite American combat division, were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. The ensuing battle was the first major fight of the conflict and was one of the most savage in history. The men, all willing to die for their country and each other, showed an uncommon valor and loyalty to their cause. This story focuses on Moore and the Associated Press reporter named Joseph Galloway who was assigned to cover the story, as this tiny group held their ground for an unbelievable month.

"The film's major contribution to the Vietnam War movie is its willingness to view the enemy as human beings."
-- Kirk Honeycutt, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"A decent war film whose biggest strength is its telling of an important story with which the public is not entirely familiar."
– Jon Popick, PLANETSICK-BOY

"Wallace's emotional message and refreshingly non-demonised enemy make an effective tribute."
- Danny Graydon, BBCNEWS
