In this hard-hitting and emotionally charged Southern drama, the long-standing racism of a Georgia family is challenged by a surprising interracial relationship. Billy Bob Thornton is at the center of the storm as Hank, an embittered prison guard working on death row. He begins an unlikely affair with the wife (Berry) of the man he has just executed (Combs). Heath Ledger plays Hanks son who works with his father and is hell bent on getting out of the life that has formed around him. A life that has been poisoned, along with the rest of his family, by the hatred and racism of the patriarch of the family.
