Based on the best-selling novel by Janet Fitch, this film tells the story of Astrid, a young teenager who is passed from foster home to foster home after her mother commits murder. Her mother Ingrid is an independent woman and ardent free spirit who has raised her daughter likewise. Ingrid’s crime of passion leaves Astrid to struggle to find her true self through forbidden love, abandonment, religion, near-death experiences and drugs. Astrid is finally able to repay her mother’s gifts by teaching her how to love.
