Cathy and Frank Whitaker appear to be the perfect 1950‘s couple living an ideal life in Connecticut. The story takes a strange and unexpected turn when Cathy finds her husband in bed with another man. The social stigma is so great during this oppressive time period that Cathy’s friends all abandon her and she is forced into the company of the one person who will listen to her. He just happens to be their African-American gardener, which causes an even greater scandal. This film crosses sexual and racial lines and exposes hidden prejudices that, while palpably overt in the 50’s, still exist in some form today.
