Lions Gate Films; Directed by Tim Blake Nelson
108 Minutes; 2002
Based on Tim Blake Nelson’s play
this film deals with the difficult subject of Jewish oppression in the Auschwitz
in 1944. Nelson tells the story of the Sonderkommandos, a group of Hungarian
and Polish Jews who helped strip, gas and cremate other Jews. This duty afforded them otherwise
unattainable luxuries such as better food, living quarters, alcohol, cigarettes
and music but brought with it the overwhelming guilt of helping to destroy
their own people. In the final days of
the twelfth group of Sonderkomandos, they decided to destroy as many
crematoriums as possible before they were captured and killed.
