Leon De Aranoa
113 minutes; 2002
This film takes a look at
the larger issue of a globalized labor market by focusing on one small group of
workers forced out of their jobs in a shipyard. The director has a somewhat whimsical take on the issue but he
makes the point of showing how these potentially productive men have been cut
off from their previously active lives. Spain’s right-wing government is
pointedly made the target of the blame and crestfallen Joe embodies all that is
lost when a nation’s workforce is sacrificed.
